One of the main functions of local government in South Africa is to remove and dispose of waste in a responsible manner. However, this sphere of government in general has faced many challenges mainly related to issues of service delivery.
Top on the list of the causes of lack of delivery is the lack of appropriate skills in municipalities. As a result waste management as a key function of government has also been adversely affected.
The Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA) believes that through education, current and future waste generators will respect and conserve natural resources by making informed waste prevention choices.
The IWMSA prides itself in the training courses that it offers in effective waste management practices, especially the basic training for local authorities. Stan Jewaskiewitz, President of the IWMSA indicated, “our members benefit from the world class waste management training courses that we offer. We offer insight into international, national and local best practice trends. It is important that we develop the skills of waste management practitioners through our training courses.”
The IWMSA will be hosting a two-day Waste training course in Midrand from 08 – 09 September at the Bytes Conference Centre in Midrand. This course has been designed to provide attendees with an understanding of waste industry terminology and definitions, a better understanding of legislation as well as insight into safety and health requirements. The training also includes a comprehensive view of integrated planning of waste operations and systems; the evaluation and implementation of service delivery; collection, transfer and transport of waste; waste minimisation and the treatment and disposal of waste.
