Small, Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMME) are invited to register for the annual SMME Opportunity Roadshow taking place from 08:00 to 17:00 on Tuesday, 24 May 2016 at Emperors Palace, Kempton Park. The main purpose of the Roadshow is to showcase opportunities and provide focused guidance for SMMEs to make the most of their individual competitive advantage. This is the first of four roadshows scheduled to take place around the country in 2016. The other events will take place in Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town. Attendance for all registered SMMEs is free.

The Roadshow aims to assist SMMEs in three key areas of their business: The Fundamentals of Sustaining and Growing SMMEs, Enabling Funding for SMMEs and lastly Scaling up SMMEs – The Future Growth Drivers of the South African Economy.

According to the ‘Vulnerable Groups Series I: the social profile of youth, 2009-2014’* report published by Stats SA, the number of young entrepreneurs has declined from 609 000 in 2009 to 543 000 in 2014 in South Africa. “It is unclear whether limited access to funds, lack of opportunities or resources contributed to this concerning drop,” comments Puseletso Nkopane, Event Manager at Cape Media, organisers of the SMME Opportunity Roadshows. “There is a great need to unlock small business potential in South Africa and the SMME Opportunity Roadshows are the perfect platform to achieve this,” she adds.

Registrations are open: SMME owners in Gauteng can register via until Monday, 23 May 2015 at midday (12:00).

Following the Gauteng event, the SMME Roadshow Opportunity will visit:

  • Durban on Tuesday, 26 July 2016 – Durban International Convention Centre;
  • Cape Town on Tuesday, 06 September 2016 – Cape Town International Convention Centre; and
  • Port Elizabeth on Wednesday, 16November 2016 – Boardwalk Hotel & Conference Centre.

The inaugural SMME Opportunity Roadshow took place last year and provided delegates with an incredible opportunityto network with like-minded individuals and business owners, motivating them to think outside the box and even partner with other small business owners attending the event.

“In its second year the Roadshow promises to be bigger and better through the introduction of new master-class themes that focus on improving the specific function and purpose of a small business,” says Nkopane. “The SMME Opportunity Roadshow is about creating opportunities and unshakeable networks between industry game-changers and emerging businesses. New venture creation should be at the very top of every nation’s development plan to significantly reduce unemployment,” she adds.

SAfm Radio presenter, Ashraf Garda, will be the programme director for the day. Other speakers include: Professor Edith Vries, Director General of the Department of Small Business Development; Motivational Speaker, Zipho Sikhakhane; Stephen Manzini, Founder and Managing Director of Soweto Fashion Week; Elvis Sekhaolelo, Founder of eKasi Entrepreneurs; and Entrepreneurologist, Derrick Hlungwani.

“It is extremely important that our country creates sustainable employment opportunities in the SMME sector; even more vital is that these opportunities be paired with skills development in each sector,” concludes Nkopane.
