Pitch meetings go both ways
Recently I was called to help a company with some damage control as a result of negative online reviews they received. During the initial call, I did say that online reviews are generally a symptom of a larger issue. We may be able to help with the immediate containment of the situation, but, this would just be like putting a plaster over an unknown wound; we would need to dig a bit deeper and treat the root cause to avoid similar future situations.

Roger Federer took on Rafael Nadal to come out on top in the sixth match in Africa for Roger Federer’s charity. Forward-thinking inventors recognised at the SA Innovation Summit 2018
Allan Goldberg, inventor of the iHarvey, is the winner of the Inventors Garage at the 2018 SABC Education SA Innovation Summit (SAIS). He walks away with bragging rights as the best inventor from the 20 finalists that participated. iHarvey is a thermo-electric generator which produces power by converting heat into electricity, powering three high quality LED lamps and charging a USB device simultaneously. The runner-up in the Inventors Garage competition is Murray Bredin with the Pivot Optimiser, an internet-of-things monitoring and control system for agricultural irrigation centre pivots and pumps. It performs local control functions and transmits all measured data to a web server. In third place is Steven Blake with BioPay, a mobile application that allows customers to pay for goods and services at the vendor or online using their fingerprints, so that it is not necessary to carry cash or bank cards.

Voice-controlled technology for quadriplegics
Residents living at Durbanville Quadriplegic Centre have a new level of autonomy thanks to state-of-the-art voice-controlled technology. Although they have little to no control over their limbs, they are now able to perform simple daily tasks using their voice to ‘wake up’ their Voice-Activated Quality of Life (VoQol) system, known as Alexa. In the past residents would need to call a carer for help; now they just ask Alexa to switch on the light, change the television channel or call for assistance.

Winners of the football Tournament of Light in Cape Town
Fish Hoek AFC are the proud winners of the Rock-A-Fella’s Football Club Tournament of Light (under 16), after beating Rock-A-Fella’s FC in the finals on Sunday, 12 August 2018 at Rocklands Sports Complex in Mitchells Plain. They walk away with R 5 000.00, the trophy, and bragging rights as one of the best teams in Cape Town. 32 teams participated in the Tournament.
This tournament is bigger than soccer though: it is organised by Rock-A-Fella’s Football Club in Mitchells Plain, who uses the beautiful game to engage youth living in poverty and gang affected areas of Cape Town.

Schools unite to clean up river: Youngsters from schools surrounding the Liesbeek River in Cape Town are collaborating to clear and maintain a stretch of the river. Bishops Interact Club is leading the ‘Schools for the Liesbeek’ initiative. During the last clean-up, the group of 116 learners cleared at least 30 refuse bags of trash, not including a bedframe and mattress found on the riverbank!

The future belongs to the youth, and the future is now – this was the message to the winners of the Youth Innovation Challenge, hosted by the City of Tshwane in partnership with Innovation Hub. Of the 20 sustainability companies owned and run by young adults between 18 and 35 years of age who participated in the programme, nine will be incubated. After a gruelling pitching process, the top 3 were revealed last week. The companies specialised in landscaping solutions, alleviating electricity theft and smart water monitoring systems.

Injongo Project in Philippi opens newly refurbished Educare Centre
The Injongo Project, managed by Rotary Club of Claremont with financial support from the Lewis Group, invested R 2.2 million in completely overhauling Forever Educare Centre. Forever Educare is the 14th early childhood development (ECD) centre to be physically upgraded and the 58th one to benefit from the Injongo Project, bringing the total amount invested to R 18 million and making Injongo Project one of the biggest of its kind in South Africa.
