CAPTION: Learners from Greenlands Primary School in Bishop Lavis, Matroosfontein, were treated to a field trip to Intaka Island in Century City on Tuesday this week, 03 May 2016. Peninsula Beverages (PenBev – local bottler and distributor of The Coca-Cola Company products in the Western and Northern Cape) sponsored the educational trip for the grade 7 children who took a ferry ride on the Grand Canal and spent the day viewing a variety of bird species up close.

It was a beautiful day to be learning outside of the classroom and for children from Greenlands Primary School, it was no ordinary day: they were on a field trip to Intaka Island in Century City. Intaka Island consists of 16 hectares of wetland and is a bird sanctuary for more than 120 species of birds that thrive there. The grade 7 learners explored the island’s eco walks, viewed the wildlife from the man-made bird hides and learned more about the types of bird and plant species that live there. Children kept their energy levels up with a delicious lunch of sandwiches and juice before returning back to school by bus.

“We at PenBev believe that education is key to the success of children. We are pleased to be able to make learning come alive for learners by exposing them to field trips like this one where they view birdlife and ecosystems practically,” says Denise Behrens, PenBev Corporate Communications Manager.
